Coconut oil being a nutritious and delicious cooking oil is also infused with properties that nourish and hydrate skin. The benefits of using coconut oil on a daily basis are more than can’t be imagined. It’s always advised by our mothers & grandmothers to apply coconut oil before washing hair, as it’s nutritious strengthens hair follicles, nourishes the scalp, moisturizes hair, and provides a smooth and shiny look. Coconut oil is preheated before applying to the scalp so that it deeply penetrates through the layers of the scalp.

Cocos nucifera Linn. Belongs to the Palmae family and possesses many benefits for the skin. In Ayurvedic texts, many of the synonyms of Coconut are mentioned according to its properties like-

Description –

The term Coconut refers to the “Seed” or the “Fruit” of the coconut.  The botanical name Cocus nucifera means – “Nut bearing” in Latin.

In India, it is considered as “Kalpvriksha” a mythological tree that grants all desires or the tree that provides all the necessities of life.

The Sanskrit term “Narikela” for coconut is derived from 2 words of South Asian origin “Niyor”- meaning Oil & “Kolai” – meaning Nut

As per belief, coconut is omnipresent in Indian culture. Hindu scriptures refer to it as Shrifal. A coconut tree’s lifespan is 120 years in general, but on average 70 years. The coconut tree is known as Thennam Pillai in Tamil Nadu, which means “coconut child”; it is never referred to as a tree. In Tamil tradition, even cutting down a live coconut tree is considered a sin which is equal to killing own child.

A coconut tree can consume every kind of water, from sweet groundwater too salty seawater, yet the fruit only gives sweet water. This is equal to the life of an ascetic or a mother because only they give good things to their followers and children. Pregnant women are not allowed to break coconuts because doing so would be equal to killing a life form and could also harm the fetus in the womb.

A coconut resembles the head of a human – Hardshell is covered by unwanted hair like coir, eyes are covered by hard and sharp coir imitating our pride

  • The white sweet layer denotes the pure soul

One breaks open the coconut during the pooja to indicate that Ego, Selfishness, and Pride to expose the soul to God. Coconut has three eyes and symbolically represents Lord Shiva. This is the reason why in rituals coconut is made a witness to indicate that it happens in the presence of Shiva.

In Hindu rituals, according to a legend, Vishwamitra was moved upon witnessing the human or animal sacrifice. Vishwamitra introduced breaking open a coconut that resembled a life form in order to put an end to such life sacrifices.

Various uses of Coconut for skin-

Coconut oil is not just an all-natural skin & hair remedy. Still, it’s also a cost-effective way for most of your skin problems like- Sunburn, rashes, itching, dull-dry skin, fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes, hyperpigmentation, etc.

  1. As a makeup remover –

It’s common that we apply makeup in our day-to-day life, especially women and it has to be removed. Makeup removers could be harsh & hurt skin. But coconut oil makes this process of makeup removal so easy that it gently removes all stuff without harming the skin. Just take a few drops of Coconut oil in your palms & gently rub them on your face, avoiding vigorous rubbing and skin pulling.

You can also use a cotton ball for coconut oil application on the skin. Gently remove it with the help of a cotton ball and then rinse it off with mild face wash & normal water. It’s a very simple, cost-effective & natural way to remove your makeup without any side effects.

  1. Coconut oil Hair growth-

We all know Coconut oil works wonders for smooth, shiny, and strong hair growth. It penetrates deeply providing nourishment to the hair roots, it can also be used in eyelashes for bigger lashes, which every woman wants. As coconut oil penetrates your eyelash follicles, it stimulates hair growth and strengthens your lashes. Regularly using coconut oil in lashes will leave you with longer, denser, and flaunt-worthy lashes.

  1. As a moisturizer –

Coconut oil is rich in saturated fats, which is a skin moisturizer. Applying coconut oil to the affected areas on your face can soothe your sunburns instantly. Sunburned skin is always dry and itchy. However, coconut oil can help relieve these symptoms by replenishing the skin’s moisture.

Coconut oil is 99% fat and composed of saturated fats, half of the saturated fat content is Lauric Acid, while others are- Myristic acid, Palmitic acid, and Caprylic acid. Hence it acts as an excellent moisturizer for the skin.

Coconut oil helps in skin softening and keeps away from dry skin. It can be used with other ingredients as a scrubber. Coffee granules work great as a scrub, they cleanse skin & unclog pores. But simply using Coffee granules could be harsh on the skin. Just mix half a teaspoon of Coconut oil in coffee granules and gently exfoliate your skin. Coconut oil will act as a moisturizer and coffee will remove dirt. Doing so will vastly improve the effects. Moisturizing your face with this mixture on a regular basis will help remove dead skin and clean out the substances that have blocked skin pores.

Nowadays serums are used before applying makeup to achieve a glowing look but it can be achieved naturally just by applying a few drops of coconut oil on the face and then continuing with the basic makeup. It’s a natural way to protect your skin from harsh chemicals.  Oil will act as a barrier by preventing the harmful chemicals in makeup products from entering the skin that may clog pores and further lead to acne and many other skin issues.

 

  1. Reduces signs of ageing –

While ageing is natural, there are ways to take care of your skin to preserve it for as long as possible. From boosting collagen production to protecting skin, it possesses many benefits. While on the one hand, Vitamin E and fatty acids promote the production of new skin cells, Lauric acid on the other, prevents signs of ageing.

Regularly applying coconut oil on the face helps to prevent fine lines and other signs of ageing. Just take a few drops of coconut oil in your palm and gently apply it to your face and neck region, try to use this remedy before going to bed at night. And if you are suffering from dry skin it will work like a miracle.

Coconut oil with Coffee granules benefits-

For most of us, Coffee is an energy booster but rather than consuming it can be applied topically for great results. When applied topically it reduces cellulite & inflammation of the skin. It contains Chlorogenic acid and Melanoidins which act as anti-inflammatory agents, hence when applied topically it reduces cellulite and any facial inflammation. Chlorogenic acid helps in treating Hyperpigmentation and evens skin tone too.

So how to use coffee with coconut?

  • Take 1 teaspoon of coffee granules in a bowl
  • Mix half a teaspoon of coconut oil to it
  • Blend it properly
  • Apply it to your face & neck region
  • Gently exfoliate your skin for 2-3 minutes
  • Leave it for a few minutes and then wash it off with normal water

Using this remedy helps you in two ways – one it cleanses pores, secondly, it moisturizes skin naturally. But it’s always advisable to do a patch test in your hand before directly applying it to your face as some people may be allergic to coffee or coconut oil. And if you are suffering from a puss-filled acne-like condition, then avoid scrubbing as it may hurt your acne & they may rupture.
